Allergies

Allergies come with a dizzying array of symptoms, from mild reactions like sniffling noses, itchy eyes and hives to the life-threatening throat swelling of anaphalaxis.  Basically, what happens in an allergic reaction is that the body’s immune system reacts to something not normally harmful – like pollen, dust or peanuts. When the offending substance, called an allergen, is either inhaled, ingested or comes in contact with skin, the immune system goes into overdrive, producing antibodies and triggering a histamine response, which is where the allergy symptoms begin.

Up to 20 percent of Americans have some sort of allergies, according to the health website webMD. You can read more about the physiological response here: http://www.webmd.com/allergies/guide/allergy-basics  Standard remedies for allergies include a dizzying array of medicines – from decongestants to antihistamines to steroids, all aimed at controlling symptoms.  However, not everyone wants to go the chemical route for relief, and there are alternatives.  One of the most basic and effective, especially for seasonal allergies like hay fever, is the neti pot. This small, spouted pot can be used to simply flush out the nasal passages and clear out any irritants. Nasya, or healing oils applied to the nostrils, can also help. There are tons of online videos showing how to properly use and cleaning neti pots but this one includes nasya: http://store.chopra.com/content.asp?id=27

Of course, how well our immune system is functioning is also related to proper nutrition and stress management. In Ayurveda this concept is known as agni, or digestive fire.   “When agni is burning brightly, our body won’t mount an aggressive response to foreign material such as pollen, but instead will remove it in a healthy, beneficial way,” writes Sheila Patel, M.D., medial director of the Chopra Center. “In other words, our body is more resilient to changes in the environment.”  According to Patel, different types of allergies symptoms are seen when different doshas are out of balance. For instance, when Pitta is off, allergy symptoms tend to skin problems and chest infections, but Vata imbalance is often indicated with sneezing, dry eyes, and muscle aches. Patel recommends breathing techniques and meditation for keeping agni strong. She also recommends cleansing the body of toxins, known in Ayurveda as ami. Triphala, an Ayurvedic herbal preparation made out of three different fruits, can help with this. Her excellent article can be found here: http://www.chopra.com/ccl/an-ayurvedic-approach-to-seasonal-allergies/#  Research shows acupuncture can bring relief – especially for those who suffer multiple allergies including sniffling noses.
