Some days I’ll look in the mirror and wonder how the heck my hair all of a sudden got so long. Its slow creeping growth has surprised me. Then there are times when it seems that no matter how much conditioner I use, my hair has a never ending thirst, and appears grayer than usual.

My usual reaction is to cut it back.  Short. But that only delays the inevitable creeping growth and graying thirst.

I find it not entirely coincidental that there’s an plant called bhringaraj that has similar traits – slowly creeping, moisture loving with gray roots – that is featured heavily in Ayurvedic medicine to treat just such conditions of the hair.

Bhringaraj (bot. Eclipta prostrata, Eclipta alba) oil and powder is widely used throughout India and Asia to rejuvenate hair and treat conditions of the scalp. A black dye can be extracted from the plant and used to dye hair and in tattooing.

A study in rats showed that petroleum ether extracts of Eclipta prostrata decreased the amount of time it took for hair to begin regrowing and to fully regrow in shaved albino rats. The result of treatment with Eclipta prostrata were better than the positive control, 2% minoxidil.( )

Ayurvedic medicine also considers Bhringaraj to be a superior liver tonic that helps stimulate and support liver and spleen function and aid digestive imbalances.

It is used to help reduce mucous and relieve coughs associated with asthma.  Bhringaraj has also been used as a poultice for wounds and as a blood purifier, applied to the gums to ease toothaches, and it’s anti-inflammatory effect has been found to treat athletes foot and dermatitis, insect bites, stings, swellings and other skin diseases.
